The Santa Clara Vanguard would win the 1989 DCI world championship, 1 of their 7 titles as a Drum Corps.
SCV is the only corps to make the finals every year of their existence.
The 1989 show is based of the Broadway musical, Phantom of the Opera.
Vanguard played off this theme in both 88′ and 89′, back to back years.
They placed second in 88′, just to say “I can do it better”, winning in 89′
Both shows are very similar, using the same music throughout both productions, with 89′ just chainging the order and keys around a bit.
However, 89′ seems to pack more of a punch. 88′ was well put together and had the usual Vanguard class, but 89′ was definetely more refined and clean.
The 89′ show was exactly what Vanguard needed to get back on top and win yet another championship.
They would repeat their victory 10 years later in 99′ and would win their most recent Championship in 2018.
The Vanguard continues to showcase class and excellence in all of their productions on and off the field.
I cannot wait to see what they do next.
